Noumea is on which main island of New Caledonia?

The story behind the answer

Nouméa is located on Grande Terre, the main island of New Caledonia.

Grande Terre is New Caledonia’s largest and principal island, stretching roughly northwest to southeast in the southwest Pacific. Nouméa, the territory’s capital and largest urban center, is situated at the island’s southern end. Locals sometimes call Grande Terre “Le Caillou,” meaning “the pebble.”

The other choices are separate islands in New Caledonia’s island group. Île des Pins lies southeast of Grande Terre, while Maré and Lifou are part of the Loyalty Islands to the east. Grande Terre is much larger than these islands and contains the territory’s main mountain chain, road network, population centers, and major mining areas.
