Ipswich Town’s opening-weekend win was their first top-flight Matchweek 1 victory since the 1993–94 season.
Ipswich defeated Sunderland 2–1 on 22 August 2026, securing a memorable return to the Premier League. The club’s previous top-flight Matchweek 1 victory had come in 1993–94.
Emersonn opened the scoring for Ipswich after combining with Julio Enciso. Sunderland equalised through Nilson Angulo, whose direct free-kick made him the first player since Marcos Alonso in 2021–22 to score his team’s first season goal that way. Substitute Jack Clarke then scored in the 90th minute.
The result was therefore more than a routine three points: it connected Ipswich’s return to the top flight with a club milestone stretching back more than three decades.
