In White Christmas, which actor plays the former soldier and entertainer Bob Wallace?

The story behind the answer

In White Christmas, Bing Crosby plays the former soldier and entertainer Bob Wallace.

Bob forms a successful singing-and-dancing partnership with Phil Davis, played by Danny Kaye. After serving in World War II, the pair build a stage career and become involved with sisters Betty and Judy Haynes, played by Rosemary Clooney and Vera-Ellen.

The story eventually brings the performers to a Vermont inn owned by their former commanding officer, General Henry Waverly. Their work to save the inn provides the film’s sentimental Christmas storyline and links the entertainment plot to wartime friendship.

Michael Curtiz directed White Christmas, which was released in 1954. The title song had already become famous through Bing Crosby’s earlier recording and film performance in Holiday Inn. Although the movie uses the song prominently, it is not a direct sequel to Holiday Inn.
