Who composed the jazz score for the 1965 television special A Charlie Brown Christmas?

The story behind the answer

Vince Guaraldi composed the jazz score for the 1965 television special A Charlie Brown Christmas.

Guaraldi’s music gives the animated program a distinctive sound, blending jazz piano, bass, and drums with memorable melodies. The best-known piece is “Christmas Time Is Here,” while “Linus and Lucy” became closely associated with the wider Peanuts television series.

The special was produced by Lee Mendelson and directed by Bill Melendez, based on Charles M. Schulz’s Peanuts comic strip. Its music was unusual for a prime-time animated Christmas program, but the relaxed jazz style became one of the special’s defining features.

The soundtrack album, released in 1965, eventually became one of the best-selling jazz Christmas recordings. Guaraldi died in 1976, but his Peanuts compositions continued to be performed and reused in later Peanuts productions. The score is sometimes mistakenly credited to a general studio music team rather than to Guaraldi himself.
