In the 1946 Christmas film It’s a Wonderful Life, George Bailey’s fictional hometown is Bedford Falls.
The town is the central setting of Frank Capra’s film, following George from childhood through adulthood as he helps build the Bailey family business and serves his community. Bedford Falls is presented as a recognizable American town whose fortunes are closely tied to George’s choices and relationships.
Near the film’s emotional turning point, George experiences an alternate reality in which the town has become Pottersville because he was never born. Pottersville is therefore not the town’s original name; it is the darker version shown during Clarence’s intervention.
The name Bedford Falls has also led to discussion about possible real-world inspirations, but the film does not identify a real town as its direct model. The movie was adapted from Philip Van Doren Stern’s 1943 story “The Greatest Gift” and released in 1946. Its Christmas setting and themes of community, sacrifice, and personal worth helped make it a seasonal classic.
