Hull City had last beaten Manchester United in the league in 1974 before their 2026–27 opening-weekend victory.
Hull defeated Manchester United 2–0 at MKM Stadium on 22 August 2026. Semi Ajayi scored in the 17th minute, and Nobel Mendy added a second goal before half-time.
The victory was historically significant because Hull had not beaten United in a league match since 1974, when both clubs were playing in the old Second Division. It was also Hull’s first top-flight win over Manchester United.
The match marked Hull’s return to the Premier League after a nine-year absence. The Tigers therefore combined a memorable promotion return with a long-awaited league victory over one of England’s most successful clubs.
