The Disney Store launched its official online store in the United States in 1996.
The online launch extended Disney’s retail business beyond shopping centers and theme parks. Customers could order Disney clothing, toys, home goods, collectibles, and character merchandise through the internet rather than visiting a physical Disney Store.
The service appeared during the early commercial growth of the World Wide Web, when online retail was still developing. It helped Disney reach fans who did not live near a store or theme park.
The online store should not be confused with Disney Auctions, which launched later in 2000 as a separate auction platform. Disney’s web retail operations have since changed ownership and branding in different markets, but the 1996 launch marked an important early step in Disney e-commerce.
