The award recognized the album commonly known as The Black Album, rather than one individual song. The ceremony followed the album's 1991 release and marked Metallica's third consecutive win in the category.
The victory had added historical context because Metallica had lost the inaugural combined hard rock and metal Grammy in 1989 to Jethro Tull. After the Recording Academy separated the genres, Metallica won Best Metal Performance for “One” in 1990 and “Stone Cold Crazy” in 1991 before the album won in 1992.
The band later became the category's most successful artist by number of wins. The Black Album's Grammy victory therefore represents both a major honor for that specific record and an important stage in Metallica's early awards history.
