Beyoncé received her first Academy Award nomination in 2022.
Her nomination came at the 94th Academy Awards for Best Original Song. The nominated song was “Be Alive,” written by Beyoncé and Dixson for the film King Richard. The song plays over the film’s end credits and reflects the Williams family’s determination and achievements in tennis.
King Richard, directed by Reinaldo Marcus Green, portrays Richard Williams and the development of his daughters Venus and Serena into world-class tennis players. Will Smith played Richard Williams, while the film’s music included “Be Alive” as its principal original song submission.
Beyoncé did not win the category at that ceremony; the award went to “No Time to Die,” written for the James Bond film of the same name. Her nomination was nevertheless her first recognition by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.
