AC/DC performed at the Monsters of Rock festival in Moscow in 1991. The concert took place on 28 September 1991 at Tushino Airfield, shortly after the failed August coup attempt against Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev.
The Moscow event was part of the 1991 Monsters of Rock tour, whose lineup also included Metallica, Pantera, The Black Crowes and the Soviet band E.S.T. Entry was free, helping draw an enormous crowd; estimates range from roughly 500,000 to more than one million people. The scale and the tense atmosphere surrounding the late Soviet period made the concert a landmark in rock history.
AC/DC's performance was later featured in the concert film For Those About to Rock: Monsters in Moscow. Recordings of “Whole Lotta Rosie” and “The Jack” from the show also appeared on AC/DC live releases. A common mix-up is the film's 1992 release date: the concert itself happened in 1991, while the documentary came out the following year.
