DreamHack Winter 2013, the first Counter-Strike: Global Offensive Major, was held in Jönköping, Sweden.
The tournament took place at Elmia, a large exhibition and convention venue in Jönköping, during November 2013. DreamHack’s events were closely associated with enormous local-area-network gatherings, where thousands of participants brought computers to play, compete, and socialize.
Jönköping’s event became historically important because Valve designated it as the first Global Offensive Major. Fnatic won the championship after defeating Ninjas in Pyjamas in the final, beginning the formal Major lineage that later became one of esports’ most recognized tournament traditions.
Stockholm and Gothenburg are also Swedish cities connected with major esports events, which can make the location easy to misremember. The inaugural Global Offensive Major was specifically staged in Jönköping at DreamHack Winter.
