In which lunar region did Apollo 16 land?

The story behind the answer

Apollo 16 landed in the Descartes Highlands of the Moon.

The landing took place on April 21, 1972, when commander John Young and lunar module pilot Charles Duke descended in the lunar module Orion. The site was selected to investigate highland terrain thought to contain volcanic rocks and material from major lunar impacts.

Young and Duke explored the region using the Lunar Roving Vehicle, while command module pilot Thomas Mattingly orbited overhead in Casper. Their fieldwork and sample collection helped scientists reassess the nature and age of the lunar highlands.

The mission was the fifth crewed lunar landing. Apollo 16’s landing region is sometimes confused with Apollo 15’s Hadley–Apennine site or Apollo 17’s Taurus–Littrow valley, but each mission visited a distinct area.
