Beyoncé began her professional music career in the Houston group Girl’s Tyme.

Girl’s Tyme was a girl group formed in Houston in 1990. Beyoncé performed with the group alongside Kelly Rowland and other young singers, while her father, Mathew Knowles, became involved in managing the act.

The group competed on the television talent program Star Search in 1993 but lost in the group category. Girl’s Tyme later evolved through lineup and name changes before becoming Destiny’s Child. That later group made Beyoncé internationally famous, but Girl’s Tyme is the earlier act associated with the beginning of her professional career.
