In which English county is the Glastonbury Festival held?

The story behind the answer

The Glastonbury Festival is held in the English county of Somerset.

The festival site is Worthy Farm, between the villages of Pilton and Pylle in Somerset. It lies roughly six miles east of the town of Glastonbury and is overlooked by Glastonbury Tor, a landmark strongly associated with the area’s legends and history.

The festival is therefore not held in the town of Glastonbury itself, despite sharing its name. The modern event grew from the 1970 Pilton Pop, Blues & Folk Festival, staged by local dairy farmer Michael Eavis at Worthy Farm. Its rural Somerset setting remains central to the festival’s identity.

The location is also geographically distinctive: Worthy Farm sits near the head of the Whitelake River, between low limestone ridges on the southern edge of the Mendip Hills. Nearby Shepton Mallet is around three miles to the northeast, making it another useful reference point when identifying the site.
