In which country is most of Assassin's Creed II set?

The story behind the answer

Most of Assassin's Creed II is set in Italy.

The game follows Ezio Auditore as he becomes involved with the Assassin Brotherhood during the Italian Renaissance. Its major locations include Florence, Monteriggioni, San Gimignano, Forlì, Venice, and the Vatican area of Rome.

This setting allowed Ubisoft to build a historical world around famous Renaissance cities, architecture, political rivalries, and figures such as Leonardo da Vinci. Leonardo helps Ezio interpret discoveries and adapt inventions into useful equipment, including improvements related to the hidden blade.

Italy is the country-level answer, while “the Italian Renaissance” describes the broader historical period. The game does not remain exclusively in one city: Florence and Venice are especially important, but several other locations are also playable. Assassin's Creed II was released in 2009 and is the second major entry in the series.
