In which city was Novak Djokovic born?

The story behind the answer

Novak Djokovic was born in Belgrade, the capital of Serbia. He was born on 22 May 1987, when the city was part of the Socialist Republic of Serbia within the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia.

Belgrade sits at the meeting point of the Sava and Danube rivers and has long been a major cultural, political, and sporting centre in the Balkans. Djokovic grew up in Serbia and began playing tennis at age four. His early development was strongly influenced by coach Jelena Genčić, whom he met at a tennis camp on Mount Kopaonik when he was six.

A common mix-up is Novi Sad, another important Serbian city. Djokovic’s parents later sent him to a tennis camp there, but Novi Sad is not his birthplace. Sarajevo and Zagreb are also major cities in the former Yugoslavia, yet neither is correct: Sarajevo is in Bosnia and Herzegovina, while Zagreb is the capital of Croatia. Djokovic’s birthplace is generally listed historically as Belgrade, SR Serbia, SFR Yugoslavia, and today as Belgrade, Serbia.
