In which city is the Sagrada Familia located?
Answer
Barcelona
Answer
Barcelona
The Sagrada Família is located in Barcelona, Spain.
The basilica stands in Barcelona’s Eixample district and is one of the city’s defining landmarks. Catalan architect Antoni Gaudí took over the project in 1883 and transformed it into an intensely symbolic design combining Gothic Revival, Art Nouveau, and Catalan Modernisme.
Construction began in 1882 and continued after Gaudí’s death in 1926. The church was consecrated by Pope Benedict XVI in 2010, but significant work remains. Its long construction history is partly explained by interruptions, including the Spanish Civil War, when Gaudí’s workshop and models were damaged or destroyed.
A common mix-up is confusing Barcelona with Seville, Valencia, or Madrid. Those cities have important Spanish architecture, but the Sagrada Família is specifically Barcelona’s famous unfinished basilica. It is also distinct from Barcelona Cathedral, a separate historic church in the city’s Gothic Quarter.
