The FIFA World Cup trophy is permanently displayed in Zurich, Switzerland.
The original trophy is kept at the FIFA World Football Museum in Zurich, the Swiss city where FIFA is headquartered. It is displayed there between official appearances and is not routinely held by the reigning champion. FIFA takes it out for selected occasions, including the World Cup final, the final draw and official trophy tours.
The modern trophy was introduced in 1974 after Brazil permanently received the Jules Rimet Trophy for winning the World Cup for the third time in 1970. Italian artist Silvio Gazzaniga designed the replacement, which shows two human figures lifting a globe. It is made of 18-karat gold and has a base decorated with malachite.
A common mix-up is Rio de Janeiro, where the Jules Rimet Trophy was kept by Brazil before it was stolen in 1983. Rio is also associated with a replica of that older trophy, but the current original FIFA World Cup Trophy is kept in Zurich.
