In which city does the opera sequence take place in Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation?

The story behind the answer

The opera sequence in Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation takes place in Vienna.

The sequence centers on the Vienna State Opera, where Ethan Hunt attempts to stop an assassination during a performance of Giacomo Puccini’s Turandot. The elaborate setting allows the film to combine disguises, surveillance, backstage movement and a suspended fight above the stage.

Vienna is one of several international locations used in Rogue Nation, whose story also moves through London, Casablanca and Minsk. The opera-house set piece is especially memorable because Hunt must identify the correct attacker while several people, including Benji Dunn, become involved in the operation.

The scene is sometimes confused with other European sequences in the series. Prague is strongly associated with the first Mission: Impossible film, while the Vienna opera belongs specifically to Rogue Nation, the fifth film, released in 2015.
