Final overdubs and mixing for Metallica’s The Black Album took place in Hollywood, California.
The band completed this stage at A&M Studios during June and July 1991. That work followed the main recording sessions at One on One Recording Studios in Los Angeles and a shorter period at Little Mountain Sound Studios in Vancouver, British Columbia.
The distinction matters because the album’s production involved several locations. One on One is associated with the start and bulk of the recording, while A&M Studios in Hollywood handled the final overdubs and mixing that shaped the finished master.
Bob Rock produced the album, with James Hetfield and Lars Ulrich also credited as producers. The demanding process involved numerous takes and extensive editing, reflecting the band’s perfectionism. The completed record had a cleaner, heavier, and more streamlined sound than Metallica’s earlier albums, helping it reach audiences far beyond the group’s established metal fan base.
