In which book of the Bible is Noah’s Ark described?

The story behind the answer

Noah’s Ark is described in the Book of Genesis.

The flood narrative appears in Genesis chapters 6–9, within the Hebrew Bible and Christian Old Testament. God tells Noah to build an ark because humanity has become corrupt, then instructs him to bring his family and representatives of the animals aboard.

Genesis presents the ark story as part of a larger sequence involving creation, human violence, judgment, and covenant. After the waters recede, Noah leaves the vessel and offers a sacrifice. God then establishes a covenant with Noah and all living creatures.

Readers sometimes confuse the story’s location because flood traditions also appear in the Quran and in ancient Mesopotamian literature. However, Genesis is the biblical book containing the most detailed account of Noah’s Ark. The narrative is distinct from the separate flood story in the Babylonian Epic of Gilgamesh, although scholars compare their flood traditions because both include a chosen survivor, a large boat, animals, birds, and receding waters.
