In Genesis, where did Noah say the dove could not find a place to rest?

The story behind the answer

In Genesis, the dove returned because it could not find a resting place for the sole of its foot.

Genesis 8:9 says the dove found no “resting place for the sole of her foot” because water still covered the whole earth. Noah reached out and brought the dove back into the Ark. This first flight was followed by a second flight seven days later, when the bird returned with an olive leaf.

The wording explains why the dove’s first trip did not establish that the Flood was over. A bird could fly above the water without finding exposed ground. Genesis therefore uses the later olive leaf and the dove’s final non-return as successive signs of receding waters.
