In what year was the Premier League founded?

The story behind the answer

The Premier League was founded in 1992. More precisely, the competition was established as the FA Premier League on 20 February 1992, after the clubs in the old Football League First Division decided to break away from the Football League.

The breakaway was driven partly by the desire for greater commercial independence and a more lucrative television-rights deal. The top-flight clubs signed the Founder Members Agreement on 17 July 1991, setting out the principles for the new competition before it formally launched.

The first Premier League season was 1992–93, contested by 22 clubs. Manchester United became the inaugural champions, while Aston Villa finished runners-up. This creates a common mix-up: 1992 was the year the league was formed, but the first season ran across 1992 and 1993. The competition was later reduced to 20 clubs from 1995–96.
