The LEGO Technic theme launched in 1977 under the original name Expert Builder.
Unlike ordinary LEGO sets, Expert Builder introduced more specialised parts for mechanical construction, including gears, axles, pins and beams. These elements allowed builders to create working steering, transmissions and other functional mechanisms rather than mainly decorative models.
The theme was renamed LEGO Technic in 1984. The new name reflected its established identity as LEGO’s advanced mechanical construction system and remains the name used today.
A common mistake is to date Technic itself to 1984. That is the year the Expert Builder name changed, not the year the product line began. The earlier Expert Builder sets are therefore regarded as the foundation of modern LEGO Technic.
