Destiny’s Child was renamed from Girl’s Tyme in 1996.
Girl’s Tyme was a Houston-based group featuring Beyoncé Knowles, Kelly Rowland, LaTavia Roberson, and LeToya Luckett. The members had performed together for several years before signing with Columbia Records.
The new name marked the group’s transition into a professional recording act. Destiny’s Child released its self-titled debut album in 1998, and its early single “No, No, No” helped establish the group commercially.
The lineup changed during the group’s history. Roberson and Luckett later departed, while Michelle Williams joined Beyoncé and Rowland. That trio became the best-known version of Destiny’s Child and recorded major hits including “Say My Name” and “Survivor.”
