In what year was the Barcelona Pavilion built?

The story behind the answer

In what year was the Barcelona Pavilion built? The Barcelona Pavilion was built in 1929.

Mies van der Rohe and Lilly Reich designed the pavilion for Germany at the 1929 International Exposition in Barcelona. It was conceived as a reception space rather than a conventional exhibition hall, presenting a carefully staged image of modern Germany.

The building used a steel frame, glass walls, and luxurious slabs of marble, travertine, and red onyx. Instead of dividing the interior into conventional rooms, Mies arranged planes that guide movement and create changing views. The famous Barcelona Chair was designed for the pavilion’s ceremonial setting.

The original structure was dismantled in 1930 after the exposition. Because of its importance to architectural history, a faithful reconstruction was built on the original site between 1983 and 1986. The date 1929 refers to the original pavilion’s completion and exhibition, not the later reconstruction. Another common simplification is crediting Mies alone: Reich was also a key designer and collaborator.
