Metallica's expanded remastered box set for the album commonly called The Black Album was released in 2021.
The set marked the album's 30th anniversary and greatly expanded the original 12-track program. It included a remastered version of the studio album alongside demos, rough mixes, live recordings, and other archival material connected with the album's creation and promotion.
The anniversary package appeared three decades after the original album's August 12, 1991, release. It also arrived in the same anniversary period as The Metallica Blacklist, a separate 2021 covers album featuring more than 50 artists interpreting songs from Metallica.
The box set should not be confused with the original album, the 1992 concert documentary A Year and a Half in the Life of Metallica, or the 1991 release of the album itself. Its purpose was archival expansion and remastering, not a new Metallica studio album.
