James Cameron’s film Titanic was released in 1997.
The film premiered in the United States on December 19, 1997. Cameron wrote, directed, co-produced, and co-edited the epic romance and disaster film, which dramatizes the 1912 sinking of RMS Titanic through the fictional characters Jack Dawson and Rose DeWitt Bukater.
Titanic became a major cultural event and remained the highest-grossing film ever made until Cameron’s Avatar surpassed it in 2010. It later returned to the top of the worldwide box office after subsequent re-releases, including a 3D version for its centennial.
The year is sometimes confused with the dates of Titanic’s production and awards campaign. The film was made during the mid-1990s, but its theatrical release and original worldwide success belong to 1997. It won 11 Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Director.
