Counter-Strike: Global Offensive was released in 2012.
Valve and Hidden Path Entertainment launched Global Offensive on August 21, 2012. It followed Counter-Strike, Counter-Strike: Condition Zero, and Counter-Strike: Source, bringing the series to newer consoles and computers while retaining its round-based tactical design.
Global Offensive added updated versions of familiar maps, weapons, and game modes. Its competitive matchmaking, later supported by ranks and Prime status, helped make it a major esports title. The game also became closely linked with weapon skins, cases, and the Steam Workshop.
Some players confuse the release year with the start of its beta period. A limited beta began before the full launch, and the game was announced in 2011. The official retail release, however, took place in 2012. Global Offensive was eventually superseded by Counter-Strike 2 in 2023.
