In what year was Buffalo City Hall completed?

The story behind the answer

Buffalo City Hall was completed in 1931.

The 32-story municipal skyscraper stands at 65 Niagara Square and was designed by the Buffalo architectural firm Dietel, Wade & Jones. Its Art Deco styling reflects the optimism and civic ambition of the early 1930s, when cities used monumental public buildings to project modernity and stability.

The building rises about 398 feet and remains one of the largest municipal buildings in the United States. Its decoration is unusually rich for a government office tower: exterior friezes and interior artwork symbolize Buffalo’s history, including its Indigenous heritage, industries, education, electrical power, and waterfront economy.

A common mix-up is the distinction between construction and completion dates. Buffalo City Hall was built during the early 1930s, but the year generally given for its completion is 1931. It was later added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1999.
