The Carbide & Carbon Building is located at what street address?
Answer
230 North Michigan Avenue
Answer
230 North Michigan Avenue
The Carbide & Carbon Building is located at 230 North Michigan Avenue.
The Chicago skyscraper stands along Michigan Avenue in the Loop, near the Michigan Avenue Bridge and the Chicago River. Completed in 1929, it was designed by the Burnham Brothers architectural firm for the Union Carbide and Carbon Corporation, whose name the building preserves.
Its Art Deco exterior is unusually theatrical. Black granite forms the base, while dark green and gold terra cotta, bronze trim, and gold-leaf ornament create a jewel-box effect. The design is often compared with Raymond Hood’s American Radiator Building in New York, another skyscraper known for a dark facade and bright metallic detailing.
The address is sometimes confused with nearby Michigan Avenue landmarks, including 333 North Michigan and the London Guarantee Building. The Carbide & Carbon Building itself is specifically at 230 North Michigan Avenue. Its office use later changed: after restoration and redevelopment, it became a hotel, first associated with the Hard Rock brand and later reopened as Pendry Chicago.
