How tall is the tower of Buffalo City Hall?

The story behind the answer

The tower of Buffalo City Hall is 398 feet tall. Completed in 1931, the 32-story Art Deco building remains one of Buffalo's most recognizable landmarks and one of the tallest municipal buildings in the United States.

The project was designed by Dietel, Wade & Jones and built on Niagara Square, a prominent site in Joseph Ellicott's early plan for Buffalo. Its height and setbacks reflect the skyscraper-era preference for verticality while also allowing light and air to reach the streets below.

The measurement can cause confusion because the building has an observation deck roughly 360 feet above street level, while the full structure reaches 398 feet. It is also sometimes compared with the taller Seneca One Tower, which is Buffalo's tallest building overall, but City Hall remains the city's signature civic skyscraper.

The building contains 32 stories, although only 26 provide usable office space. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1999 and is noted for its sandstone, limestone, granite, terra-cotta ornament and richly decorated interior.
