Winnie ille Pu became the first foreign-language book on The New York Times Best Seller list in 1960.
Winnie ille Pu is Alexander Lenard’s Latin translation of A. A. Milne’s Winnie-the-Pooh. Lenard began the translation while teaching in Brazil and published the first edition in 1958.
The book’s success was unusual because Latin was generally associated with classical texts rather than contemporary children’s literature. Its appearance on the bestseller list made it a notable publishing event and attracted attention well beyond Pooh fandom.
Winnie ille Pu is also described as the only Latin book ever to appear on that list. The title uses Latin wording rather than translating the character’s name into a modern language.
