In what year did the first LEGOLAND park open in Billund, Denmark?

The story behind the answer

The first LEGOLAND park opened in Billund, Denmark, in 1968.

LEGOLAND Billund was built beside the LEGO factory and became the first theme park created around the LEGO brand. Its opening gave visitors a way to see large-scale models made from LEGO bricks, alongside rides and family attractions. Billund remains the company’s historic home and the location of the original park.

The park was developed partly to handle the large number of visitors already coming to Billund to see LEGO’s products. It quickly became an important tourist attraction in Denmark. Miniland, a central area of detailed miniature scenes, became one of the park’s defining features.

Later LEGOLAND parks opened in other countries, including the United Kingdom, Germany, the United States, Malaysia, Dubai, Japan, and South Korea. These parks are separate from LEGO retail stores and from LEGOLAND Discovery Centres, which are smaller indoor attractions. Billund is the original LEGOLAND and the one most directly connected to LEGO’s birthplace.
