Tesla released the first production version of its Powerwall home battery in 2015.
Tesla announced the Powerwall in April 2015 as a rechargeable lithium-ion battery system for homes and small businesses. The original product was designed to store electricity for later use, including energy generated by rooftop solar panels or electricity drawn from the grid during lower-cost periods.
The Powerwall expanded Tesla beyond vehicles into stationary energy storage. The first-generation unit had a usable capacity commonly listed at 6.4 kilowatt-hours and was designed for wall mounting. Later Powerwall generations changed the capacity, software, installation approach, and backup features, so the 2015 launch should not be confused with the specifications of current models.
