Supreme opened its first Los Angeles store in 2004.
The store extended the New York skate brand’s presence to the West Coast, connecting Supreme with Los Angeles’s large skateboarding, music, and streetwear scenes. Supreme began in Manhattan in 1994, so the Los Angeles opening came about a decade after the brand’s launch.
Supreme’s retail expansion was deliberately limited compared with ordinary fashion chains. Its stores became destinations for local skaters and collectors, while the brand continued releasing many products in small quantities. This scarcity helped create long queues and a strong resale market.
The Los Angeles location should not be confused with Supreme’s later shops in other American cities or its international stores. London was the brand’s first store outside the United States, while its Japanese expansion began earlier than its European one.
