Sony released the PlayStation VR headset for the PlayStation 4 in 2016.
The headset launched on 13 October 2016. It was designed as a virtual-reality accessory for the PS4 and used the console to render compatible games and experiences. The system could work with PlayStation Camera, and some titles also supported PlayStation Move controllers for motion input.
Sony originally announced the project under the development name Project Morpheus. PlayStation VR was not a standalone console; it depended on compatible PlayStation hardware and software. It is also separate from PlayStation VR2, which launched in 2023 for the PlayStation 5 and introduced newer display, tracking, and controller features.
