Metallica’s 1991 album reached the 550-week Billboard 200 milestone in 2019.
That achievement reflected the album’s extraordinary longevity rather than a short burst of early popularity. Metallica had already spent four consecutive weeks at number one after its release, but it continued appearing on the Billboard 200 decades later through sustained sales and renewed interest.
In December 2019, the album became the fourth release in American history to reach 550 weeks on the chart. It was described as the second-longest-charting traditional album at that point, behind Pink Floyd’s The Dark Side of the Moon.
The album’s staying power also contributed to its status as the best-selling album in the United States since Nielsen SoundScan tracking began in 1991. It passed 16 million US sales and was certified 2× Diamond by the RIAA in 2025 for shipping 20 million copies in the United States.
