LEGO Technic first launched in 1977 as a LEGO product line focused on advanced mechanical construction.
The line introduced functional elements such as gears, axles, pins, beams, and steering mechanisms. These parts allowed builders to create working models rather than mainly static structures. Early sets were designed to appeal especially to older children and adults interested in engineering-style building.
LEGO Technic was initially marketed under different names in different regions, including Expert Builder in some markets. This regional naming can cause confusion when comparing early catalogues. The Technic name eventually became the standard worldwide label.
Later developments included pneumatic components, motors, suspension systems, and programmable control. The line also became known for licensed cars, construction vehicles, aircraft, and other machines. Its engineering-focused parts system influenced several later LEGO robotics and motorized products.
