In what year did LEGO introduce the DUPLO brick?
Answer
1969
Answer
1969
LEGO introduced the DUPLO brick in 1969.
DUPLO bricks were designed for younger children and are twice the length, width, and height of corresponding standard LEGO bricks. That makes a DUPLO brick eight times the volume of a comparable standard brick while keeping the connection system compatible in important ways. Standard LEGO bricks can connect to the studs on top of DUPLO bricks.
The larger format makes pieces easier for small children to handle and reduces the risk associated with very small parts. DUPLO sets use simpler models, bright colors, and themes aimed at preschool-age children. The product name comes from the Latin word “duplus,” meaning “double,” referring to the bricks’ doubled dimensions.
DUPLO has remained part of LEGO’s product portfolio for decades, with sets featuring animals, vehicles, buildings, farms, trains, and familiar characters. Although its parts are larger, DUPLO is connected to the same broader construction system that defines LEGO play.
