Gucci introduced its bamboo-handled handbag in 1947.
The bag was developed in the period after the Second World War, when imported materials such as traditional leather were difficult to obtain. Gucci artisans used Japanese bamboo, heating and shaping it to create a curved handle. The unusual material became a distinctive feature of the house’s accessories.
The bamboo handle was not merely a substitute for leather. Its polished, irregular appearance gave each handle a slightly individual character, helping the design become recognizable. The bag was later carried by public figures including Ingrid Bergman, Elizabeth Taylor and Princess Diana, strengthening its association with Gucci glamour.
The bamboo bag is sometimes dated to the early 1950s because of its later popularity, but Gucci’s own historical accounts place its introduction in 1947. It also predates many of the brand’s later signature motifs, including the Flora print and the interlocking-G logo used on handbags and accessories.
