In what year did Disney’s Animal Kingdom open? Disney’s Animal Kingdom opened in 1998.

The park welcomed guests on April 22, 1998—Earth Day—at Walt Disney World in Florida. Its design combines the attractions of a theme park with live-animal habitats, conservation programs, and educational exhibits. The park’s central icon is the Tree of Life, a huge artificial tree covered with carvings of animal species.

Animal Kingdom was the fourth theme park built at Walt Disney World. It was created to emphasize the natural world and animal conservation, reflecting themes that had appeared in earlier Disney projects such as the True-Life Adventures films and the Jungle Cruise attraction.

The opening year is sometimes confused with 1997 because construction, previews, and publicity began before the public opening. Another nearby date readers may recall is 2017, when Pandora—The World of Avatar opened as a major expansion. That addition came nearly two decades after the original park debuted.
