Beyoncé received the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award in 2014.
The honor was presented at the 2014 MTV Video Music Awards, held on August 24 at The Forum in Inglewood, California. Her husband, Jay-Z, and daughter Blue Ivy presented the award. Beyoncé also performed a medley of songs from her self-titled visual album during the ceremony.
The Video Vanguard Award recognizes major contributions to music video and popular visual culture. Beyoncé’s videos had already established a strong connection between choreography, fashion, narrative, and album-era storytelling. Her 2013 album Beyoncé, released without advance promotional announcements, had particularly reinforced that visual identity.
The award is named after Michael Jackson, who received the honor in 1988. Beyoncé’s 2014 appearance is sometimes confused with other major MTV milestones, including her 2011 performance while pregnant or her 2016 Video of the Year win for “Formation.” Those are separate events from her Vanguard Award presentation.
