In what year did Beyoncé make her film debut in Carmen: A Hip Hopera?

The story behind the answer

Beyoncé made her film debut in Carmen: A Hip Hopera in 2001.

The MTV television film is a modern musical adaptation of Georges Bizet’s opera Carmen. Beyoncé played Carmen Brown, a character based on the opera’s central heroine, and Mekhi Phifer played Hill, the counterpart to Don José. The production relocated the story from nineteenth-century Spain to a contemporary American setting.

Carmen: A Hip Hopera combined spoken drama, hip-hop, and R&B performance rather than presenting Bizet’s opera in its original form. Robert Townsend directed the film, which aired on MTV in May 2001.

This role came before Beyoncé’s major theatrical-film appearances in Austin Powers in Goldmember and Dreamgirls. Because those later films were more prominent internationally, some summaries incorrectly identify one of them as her debut. Her first screen lead in a feature-length musical drama was Carmen Brown.
