In what year did Beyoncé headline Coachella as the festival’s first Black woman headliner?

The story behind the answer

Beyoncé headlined Coachella in 2018 as the festival’s first Black woman headliner.

Her performance took place on April 14 and April 21, 2018, at the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival in Indio, California. She had originally been scheduled for 2017 but postponed her appearance because she was pregnant with twins.

The 2018 show featured a large marching-band-style production and drew on historically Black college and university traditions. Beyoncé was joined by Kelly Rowland and Michelle Williams, as well as her sister Solange Knowles during the first weekend’s performance.

The performance became known as “Beychella” and was released as the concert film and live album Homecoming in 2019. The milestone is specifically about her being the first Black woman to headline Coachella, not the first woman of any race to headline the festival.
