Beyoncé became a member of the original group Girl’s Tyme in 1990.
Girl’s Tyme formed in Houston, Texas, in 1990. The group included Beyoncé Knowles, Kelly Rowland, LaTavia Roberson, and later members who participated during its early development. The young performers competed on the television talent program Star Search in 1993, although they did not win.
The group later underwent lineup and name changes before becoming Destiny’s Child. Mathew Knowles, Beyoncé’s father, became the group’s manager, and the act eventually signed with Columbia Records. Destiny’s Child’s breakthrough single “No, No, No” arrived in 1997, beginning its successful recording career.
Girl’s Tyme is often treated as an early name for Destiny’s Child, but the history is more complicated because the lineup changed over time. Beyoncé and Kelly Rowland remained central members, while Michelle Williams joined the best-known trio lineup in the early 2000s. The group disbanded after its final album, Destiny Fulfilled.
