In what fictional school does J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter attend his magical education?

The story behind the answer

Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry is the fictional school Harry Potter attends in J.K. Rowling’s series.

Hogwarts is a British boarding school for young witches and wizards. Harry receives his invitation shortly before his eleventh birthday and begins his education in the first novel, Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone. He normally studies there for seven school years, although the final year is disrupted by the conflict with Voldemort.

The school is divided into four houses: Gryffindor, Hufflepuff, Ravenclaw and Slytherin. Students take magical subjects such as Charms, Transfiguration, Potions and Defence Against the Dark Arts. The castle is protected by enchantments and contains moving staircases, secret passages and the Great Hall.

Hogwarts is not the only wizarding school in Rowling’s world. Beauxbatons and Durmstrang appear during the Triwizard Tournament, while Ilvermorny is a North American school described in later expanded material. Those institutions are distinct from Harry’s Scottish school.
