In what architectural style is Fallingwater built?

The story behind the answer

Fallingwater is built in the organic architecture style. Frank Lloyd Wright used the term to describe an approach that integrates a building with its site, materials, structure, and occupants rather than treating the house as an object placed on the landscape.

Designed in 1935 for the Kaufmann family, the Pennsylvania house projects directly over Bear Run and its waterfall. Wright famously wanted the family to live with the waterfall, not merely look at it. Local sandstone, horizontal lines, broad terraces, and reinforced-concrete cantilevers visually connect the house to the surrounding rock and woods.

Fallingwater is also often described generally as modern architecture, and that description is not false. However, Organic architecture is the more specific answer because it identifies Wright’s guiding philosophy. Its daring cantilevers later required major structural conservation, but the house remains one of the best-known examples of architecture designed in dialogue with nature.
