In Turning Red, the boy band Meilin Lee is obsessed with is 4*Town.
4*Town is a fictional five-member pop group at the center of Meilin’s teenage world. Although the name suggests four members, the group consists of Robaire, Jesse, Aaron Z., Aaron T., and Tae Young. Meilin and her friends are desperate to attend the group’s Toronto concert, which becomes one of the film’s major story goals.
The band is designed as a playful tribute to late-1990s and early-2000s boy bands, including groups such as *NSYNC and the Backstreet Boys. Pixar gave the fictional group original songs, including “Nobody Like U,” “1 True Love,” and “U Know What’s Up.” Billie Eilish and Finneas wrote the songs, with Finneas also performing as Jesse.
Viewers sometimes mistake 4*Town for a real band because its songs were commercially released and charted. However, 4*Town is fictional and exists within the world of the 2022 Pixar film. The group’s deliberately odd name is itself part of the joke: there are five members, not four.
