In Toy Story, the piggy bank character is Hamm. He is a wisecracking plastic pig who belongs to Andy’s collection and has a cork in his belly instead of a coin slot. Although he looks like a traditional piggy bank, Hamm is fully alive within the film’s world and regularly joins the other toys in their conversations and plans.
Hamm is voiced by John Ratzenberger, one of Pixar’s most frequently recurring voice actors. He is close friends with Mr. Potato Head, but the two have very different personalities: Hamm is knowledgeable and sarcastic, while Mr. Potato Head is more theatrical and argumentative. Hamm is also notably good at board games, repeatedly beating Mr. Potato Head at Battleship.
A common mix-up is confusing Hamm with Mr. Potato Head because both are prominent members of Andy’s toy group. Hamm also appears as the imaginary villain Evil Dr. Porkchop in later films, wearing Mr. Potato Head’s bowler hat. The name “Hamm” is therefore the character’s established canonical name, not merely a description of the toy.
